Undercard

What is an Undercard?

The undercard is the lineup of supporting bouts on a fight card, held before the main event and co-main event. It often features prospects building their records, returning veterans and regional contenders.

Key Points:

  1. Development role: For young fighters, undercard bouts provide regular competition, ring experience and time in front of larger crowds, all important stages of skill development.
  2. Structure: Cards are commonly divided into preliminary bouts, the undercard and the main event, with broadcast coverage sometimes starting partway through the night.
  3. Pay and exposure: Undercard purses are usually smaller than main event purses, but a strong performance on a televised card can lead to bigger opportunities.
  4. Modern promotions: League-style promotions such as Zuffa Boxing use steady event schedules to move undercard fighters toward title contention, similar to how the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) develops talent.
