Undisputed Champion

What is an Undisputed Champion?

An undisputed champion is a boxer who holds all four major world titles in a single weight class at the same time: the belts of the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO).

Key Points:

  1. Why it's rare: Each sanctioning body sets its own rankings and orders its own mandatory challengers. Collecting all four belts takes wins in the ring and years of negotiation between promoters, broadcasters and organizations.
  2. Undisputed vs. unified: A unified champion holds two or more of the major belts. Only a fighter who holds all four is considered undisputed.
  3. History: Before the WBO gained wide recognition, undisputed status meant holding the WBC, WBA and IBF titles. The four-belt standard is a more recent development.
  4. Keeping the status: Undisputed champions often lose the status outside the ring, when one sanctioning body strips a title because the champion cannot meet every organization's defense requirements at once.
  5. Modern relevance: League-style promotions such as Zuffa Boxing recognize a single champion per division, an attempt to make the clarity of an undisputed title the norm rather than the exception.

As of September 2026

  • Naoya Inoue (Japan) holds all four major belts at super bantamweight (122 lb). He's the only man currently holding all four.
  • Oleksandr Usyk was undisputed at heavyweight until he gave up his WBO belt in November 2025 rather than face his mandatory challenger.
  • Dmitry Bivol is still often called undisputed at light heavyweight, but he gave up his WBC belt, so he now holds three of the four.
  • Women's side: Gabriela Fundora (flyweight) and Dina Thorslund (bantamweight) are recognized as undisputed as of this month.

Historically

"Undisputed" has meant different things over time. Before the 1980s it meant holding the WBA and WBC titles. The IBF was added in 1983, and the WBO became the fourth belt in the 2000s.

  • Earlier eras: Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, Mike Tyson (1987–1990) and Lennox Lewis (1999), who was the last undisputed heavyweight for 25 years.
  • Four-belt era: Bernard Hopkins was first, at middleweight in 2004. Since then:
    • Terence Crawford won all four belts in three divisions. The last was super middleweight, against Canelo in September 2025.
    • Usyk won all four at cruiserweight in 2018 and at heavyweight in 2024.
    • Others include Canelo Álvarez, Josh Taylor, Jermell Charlo, Devin Haney, Inoue (at two weights), Artur Beterbiev and Bivol.
    • Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor led the way for women.

We must remember that regardless of our differences in rank we are all equal as human beings. You can always tell how caring and compassionate others are in their actions towards those "below" them. Of course you are going to treat your black belt professor kindly, but how do you treat the white belt taking their first class? In spite of the division in belt rank there must be no division as people.
