Dalian

A dalian is the short-sleeved jacket worn by practitioners of Shuai Jiao, the traditional Chinese wrestling art. It is a purpose-built training and competition garment that serves as the primary gripping interface between opponents.

The dalian is made from durable, heavy-weight fabric designed to withstand the pulling, twisting, and jerking forces generated during throws and takedowns. It fits snugly around the torso with short sleeves that cover the upper arms, providing grip points at the collar, sleeves, and body. The construction is intentionally robust. Unlike a Judo gi, which distributes gripping options across long sleeves and a skirt, the dalian concentrates the available grips into a smaller surface area, demanding more precise hand placement and stronger grip control.

Grip fighting in Shuai Jiao revolves around the dalian. Competitors battle for dominant positions on the jacket to set up throws, trips, and sweeps. The ability to secure, maintain, and break grips on the dalian is a fundamental skill that often determines the outcome of a match before any throw is attempted.

The dalian is functionally similar to the kurtka used in Sambo and the gi jacket used in Judo, though each garment reflects the specific technical priorities and throwing mechanics of its respective art.

We human beings choose to see things as we wish . Few people seem to believe this, though. We decide to be jealous, or angry, or depressed, or happy, or bored, and these choices are often based on our biased interpretations of the thoughts of others. It is amazing how much psychological control many people relinquish to others. If we think that someone else disapproves of us, we are worried. If we think that someone else is pleased with us, we are happy. If we think that someone else holds views contrary to our own, we are insulted. If we think that someone else is contemptuous of us, we are angry. With all these others determining how we feel, it is sometimes difficult to find the actual self.
