Meijin

What is Meijin?

  • Mei (名) = name, reputation, excellence
  • Jin (人) = person
Together, Meijin means “master,” “expert,” or “virtuoso.”

In Martial Arts

In the martial world, Meijin is a title given to someone who has reached the highest level of skill and understanding—someone who not only executes techniques with perfection but also embodies the spirit and philosophy of the art.

  • It goes beyond being a teacher (sensei) or even a grandmaster (sōke).
  • A Meijin represents a living model of mastery, often honored by peers or the broader community, not self-proclaimed.

In Other Fields

The title is also used in:

  • Go & Shogi (Japanese board games): A Meijin is the champion or highest-ranked player.
  • Traditional arts (tea ceremony, calligraphy, music): A Meijin is a recognized master performer.

Essence

To be called Meijin means to have achieved effortless mastery, where skill, wisdom, and character flow together. It’s not just about technique—it’s about becoming a standard others aspire to.
