Noru

What is Noru?

“Noru” (also spelled nori) is a concept from Wado-Ryu Karate that roughly translates to “to ride” or “to blend with” an opponent’s movement. It emphasizes intercepting an attack by moving in harmony with your opponent, rather than meeting force with force.

Here’s how Noru is applied in practice:

  • You “ride” or “jam” your opponent’s strike—pressing into their attack path to disrupt it.
  • This technique uses body alignment, timing, and positioning to both defend and counterattack simultaneously. E-BudoChubu KaratePavel Antonsson Shihan
  • For example, instead of a hard block, you might slide your arm along the attack line (seichusen) and use that motion to unbalance or stop your opponent, creating an opportunity for your own strike. Pavel Antonsson Shihan+1

So in essence, Noru is about effortlessly merging with the attacker’s energy, turning defense into offense in a single, fluid motion.

I have an ability to ignore all of the information coming from my body, even pain in general. I dissociate from pain, because I am not the pain that I'm feeling. That's not me. That's not who I am. I refuse to allow pain to dictate my decision making. Pain is just one piece of information that I'm receiving. My nerves are communicating to my brain that there is something going on physically that I should be aware of. I can choose to acknowledge that information or I can choose to ignore it.
