Kendogi

What is Kendogi?

A kendogi, also known simply as a keikogi or gi, is the traditional training uniform worn by practitioners of Kendo. It is specifically designed to provide comfort, durability, and ease of movement during practice and competition. The kendogi consists of two main parts:

  1. Kendogi (Jacket): This is a long-sleeved, kimono-style top made from thick, durable cotton fabric. The fabric is often woven in a way that provides extra strength and durability, which is essential for withstanding the rigorous training and sparring sessions in Kendo. The jacket is typically indigo-dyed, although white versions are also available. The indigo dye is traditional and is believed to have antibacterial properties.
  2. Hakama (Pants): These are wide, pleated trousers that are worn over the kendogi jacket. The hakama allows for a full range of motion, which is crucial for the dynamic movements involved in Kendo. The pleats in the hakama are not only traditional but also serve as a guide for proper footwork and posture.

The kendogi and hakama together form the complete training attire for Kendo practitioners. This uniform is designed to be both functional and symbolic, reflecting the discipline, respect, and tradition inherent in the martial art. The kendogi is usually tied with a belt or obi, and the hakama is secured with a series of ties and straps to ensure it stays in place during vigorous activity.

Unfortunately, religion often works to shrink and tame the very wild and mysterious forces that first drew our wonder. In the process of making the inexplicable safe for the masses, the possibilities for real illusion-piercing insight becomes reduced. One might say that they are only available to those who dare to ride the breaking crest of direct life-altering experience.
