Nage Komi
Nage komi (投げ込み) translates as "throwing repetitions" and refers to the practice of completing full throws against a compliant partner. Where uchi komi stops at the entry, nage komi carries the technique through to completion — tori executes the throw, uke lands.
Nage komi sits between uchi komi and randori in the judo training progression. It introduces full physical commitment to the throw without the unpredictability of resistance. Both parties know the technique being practiced, uke prepares proper ukemi for each repetition, and tori focuses on following through with correct mechanics.
This stage is particularly important for shoulder health in tori. A technique that stalls mid-execution — common when the body has not yet internalized the movement — transfers force to the shoulder rather than through the throw. Nage komi trains completion under cooperative conditions, conditioning the body to follow through before that commitment is tested against resistance in randori.
Nage komi also develops uke's ukemi under predictable, controlled circumstances, building the landing skills that protect against injury in live training.
