Shinobi

Shinobi (忍び), more formally shinobi-no-mono (忍びの者), is the original Japanese term for the covert operatives now commonly called ninja in popular culture. The word carries the root meaning of 'to conceal' or 'to endure,' reflecting the core principles of the practice: stealth, patience, and the discipline to act without being seen.

Historically, shinobi were most active during Japan's Sengoku period, roughly the 15th to early 17th centuries, and were concentrated in the Iga and Koga provinces of central Japan. They were employed as spies, scouts, saboteurs, and covert agents by feudal warlords seeking advantages that open warfare could not provide.

The shinobi were not typically drawn from the elite samurai class. Many came from the jizamurai, a lower order of minor landholding warriors who occupied a position between the samurai and the farming population. This social position shaped their weapons and tactics: unable to carry swords openly or operate as recognized soldiers, they developed a practical system built around concealment, adaptability, and the use of ordinary tools as weapons.

The term 'ninja' became dominant in popular culture during the 20th century, particularly through film, television, and manga. In historical documents, 'shinobi' was almost always the term used. Modern ninjutsu schools and martial historians generally prefer 'shinobi' when discussing the historical figures, reserving 'ninja' for its popular culture context.

My ninja teachers did not pound me to become faster and stronger as I would expect in any conventional martial art school. They urged me to pay more attention to what I felt. What was my attacker doing at any moment, and where did that put me? I must then change reality from within. Instead of me doing more things to him, I was supposed to sense where he was fighting to go, and then grant him what he wanted in a way that confused him into helping me win. The way to make that happen was to pay attention to my own perceptions inside and use that sensitivity to find the perfect way to usher the adversary to defeat outside.
