John Maeda is an American technologist, designer, and executive renowned for his pioneering work at the intersection of design, technology, and business. He currently serves as Vice President of Design and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft, where he focuses on integrating human-centered design principles into AI-driven products.
Born in 1966 in Seattle, Washington, Maeda was raised in a family that owned a tofu factory . He pursued Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he developed an interest in design under the mentorship of Muriel Cooper, director of MIT's Visible Language Workshop. After earning his bachelor's and master's degrees at MIT, Maeda completed a Ph.D. in design at Tsukuba University's Institute of Art and Design in Japan and later obtained an MBA from Arizona State University.
